A true brasserie should be a bit like a party: Guests from all walks of life, looking for different things, find their own little corners. Or at least that’s what the team behind Japonais envisions for its latest big-money venture, Brasserie Ruhlmann SteakHouse. If all goes as planned, sassy singles will mingle at the 30-foot-long bar under the shadow of a gold-and-silver Art Deco work. A woman will stop at one of the marble-topped bistro tables on the outdoor café long enough for a glass of wine, crème brûlée and a cigarette. And a group of high-rollers will fill a portion of the red-velvet banquettes that line the massive 200-seat dining room, settling in for classic brasserie food from a French chef with plenty of pedigree. With bouillabaisse, steak frites, onion soup and lamb navarin on his menu, Christian Delouvrier (most recently at NY’s Alain Ducasse) has done his part to set the scene. Now it’s up to Chicagoans to decide what role they’ll play. Slated to open Oct 10 at 500 W Superior St between Kingsbury and Larabee Sts (312-494-1900).

A perfect restaurant! The ambience is gorgeous, the presentation is wonderful, and the food is superb;
especially delectable mussels in saffron sauce and terrific desserts. Friendly, helpful staff. We all agreed we cannot wait to come back.
