In the Renaissance Society’s new show, “Black Is, Black Ain’t,” more than 25 artists, including Glenn Ligon, Mickalene Thomas, William Pope.L and Andres Serrano, mine the contradictions in contemporary notions of racial identity. Their work asks whether we will ever stop singling out “blackness”—and if we even should. The exhibition’s Sunday 20 opening reception will include a discussion with some of the artists from 5–6pm.
