Recording Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto is the musical equivalent of running a marathon: Everyone thinks he can do it, yet only those with the best training make it to the finish line. But since the Camerata Ireland already successfully recorded all of Beethoven’s other concertos, it was time to complete the set—although its lush yet slightly uninspired playing leaves something to be desired.
There are some minor annoyances that leave this recording a few steps closer to average. Douglas’s trills are a little uneven and heavy-handed, which distracts from the beauty of his phrasing. Also distracting was the fact that the winds needed to retune between the Allegro con brio and Largo movements.
In the Triple Concerto, Douglas plays with violinist Chee-Yun and cellist Díaz, and his energy level gets a boost from that of his fellow musicians. While they create an adequate interpretation—and even sound effortless—they could have taken another step to provide more contrast in the Rondo all Polacca. And they could have taken an even bigger step to break away from all the other Beethoven-wannabe-recordings out there.
