Paris-based nu-jazz/R&B production group Papa Jazz is behind this futuristic clubby vehicle for the Stockholm-based soul singer Kissey Asplund. Genius broken beats prevail—drawing on both drum ’n’ bass and the more recent nu-soul out of Detroit, as well as the heralded productions of the late Dillah. Oddly placed, freaky touches on tunes like the sparse “Beam Me Up,” the jazz-sampling “Syntax Error” and the stuttering “Fuss ’n’ Fight” make perfect companions for Asplund’s trippy musings and scattered, messed-up-but-cute vibes. She waxes on like an impish blogging Erykah Badu—sometimes forming songs from the barest of melodic elements—making this as fresh and frisky as displaced nu-soul should be.
