As one local lad told us, being gay in Milwaukee is like being on Cheers—everybody knows your name, which makes for a tighter, intimate and more personable community. Here’s where they hang out.
Switch
This 20-year-old corner bar wasn’t gay until eight years ago, when the owner came out (hence the name). This spot isn’t above hiring some go-go boys, but we prefer it on Thursday nights, when all the cute alterna-gays come out for karaoke. 124 W National Ave, 414-220-4340.
La Cage
The clubbiest bar in Walker’s Point, La Cage doesn’t start hopping until around midnight, when the smoke machine starts pumping, guys start taking off their shirts and the bar’s namesake cage gets filled with as many bodies as it can handle. Before then you can hang out at ETC, the bright, modern bar downstairs. 801 S 2nd St, 414-383-8330.
Walker’s Pint
With a beer garden, weekly board-game nights, and a fierce dedication to the Packers, this lesbian bar attracts the occasional gay man or two. But the motto of the place remains “Lock up your daughters.” 818 S 2nd St, 414-643-7468.
Milwaukee Pumphouse
This airy bar on the Milwaukee River identifies not as gay, but as “gay-friendly.” We saw some straight folks here, but otherwise we would have been oblivious: A Morrissey poster hung on the front door, the television only showed Cher videos and, oh yeah, the bar is called the Pumphouse. 2011 S 1st St, 414-744-7008.

PumpHouse isnt your corner bar anymore. Bought out, owned by Hispanic hot guys. Converted into a Latin Gay Nightclub w/ the Best Dj you can find Mixing Progressive House Every Friday. Seem like they are going for the Circuit Image.
