Known for putting up shows as solid as their name, sketch impresarios Brick return to Sketchfest with a cerebral brand of sketch comedy. After performing seven original Chicago reviews from 2001 to 2004, the group’s six members went on to do things like perform at Second City, puppeteer on Crank Yankers and open an improv cabaret in Bar Harbour, Maine. But as Jay-Z likes to remind us, retirement is for suckers. We caught up with Brick members Cayne Collier, Megan Kellie and Tim Mason by phone, and quickly gleaned they’ve missed each other.
The band is back together. Would you consider yourselves the Fleetwood Mac of sketch comedy?
All Oooooh.
Megan Kellie No. What? I don’t even know what that means. What does that mean?
Cayne Collier Well, we aren’t the Eagles. It took them a long time to get back together. We never really broke up.
Tim Mason We’re the Led Zeppelin.
MK No. I feel like we’re Tiny Tim with John Denver and one member of Guns n’ Roses.
Why the name Brick?
TM I saw a palette of bricks near my house and it said BRICK PEOPLE. So, originally, we were going to be the Brick People and then we shortened it to Brick.
MK One of the runner-up names was Fungus.
So no reference to the Ben Folds song about going through an abortion…
All No!
TM Or a really bad shot in basketball. Each one of our themes is like an abortion that we try to get rid of.
MK No! That’s horrible!
Why do you think comedy nerds still talk about your shows?
CC We were grounded and silly at the same time. We weren’t afraid to have things that weren’t uproarious. Like a great Fleetwood Mac album, it would have some slow songs.
TM And we always said that if we saw anything that was similar to something we had seen before, we would throw it away. I realize now how rare that was.
MK We would have some serious arguments. I think I have never hated a group of people more and at the same time loved a group of people more.
What does Brick find funny?
MK Death and fear.
TM We find optimism funny. We find the good things in life funny. Whatever that means. Like butterflies and trees and rain. Hearts.
MK Or transactions! Transactions are fucking hilarious.
