Tankboy
“If you write a lot about music, you kind of want to be accessible to everybody,” says Jim Kopeny, explaining his approach to rock writing online as Tankboy, a Web pseudonym he’s used since 1994 (“I was really into Tank Girl comics,” he says). His posts on Chicagoist.com touch on a variety of topics, but it’s his witty, alt-rock–focused music writing that wins him fans, helping the site earn about 15,000 hits a day. But even with such a following, blogging is not his day job: He usually gets up at 5:30am, writes a blog post for an hour, and then leaves for his job creating content for health care–based websites.
He’s recently posted about his awe at a Daft Punk show (“all attempts to make empirical sense of an event that truly touches one are doomed to fail…every once in a while it’s a relief to encounter something that can take those filters and allow something adulterated, and possibly mythical, past the gates”); a warning to local groups not to get involved with Emergenza, a corporation that sponsors band battles (“Emergenza isn’t really there to help you get ahead in the biz. It’s only there to help itself fatten its wallet”); and identifying Kanye West as “famous for throwing a tantrum every time he ends up being beaten by anyone else for any other award.” Despite the fact that he rarely pulls punches no matter whom he’s writing about, Tankboy finds that his most visceral reader responses come from the most innocuous of sources. “If I mention Wicker Park or hipsters, I tend to get a lot of response.”
