The Chicago Cubs became the first team to win back-to-back World Series on October 14, 1908, after:
a) Manager Frank Chance put the team through a voodoo ritual that included, oddly, drinking goat’s blood
b) Owner Charles Murphy banished Mortimer Bartman (long-lost relation to Steve Bartman) from the West Side Grounds after he allegedly poked shortstop Joseph Tinker in the eye with his walking stick
c) The Cubs defeated the Detroit Tigers 4 games to 1 before 6,210 fans at Detroit’s Bennett Park
d) Detroit center fielder Ty Cobb tripped over a black cat on his way to Game 1 of the Series

Answer: c. While the Cubs dominated in the early 20th century, winning four pennants and two World Series titles (one of the starting nine even had the balls to utter, “Whoever heard of the Cubs losing a game they had to have?”), the team enters play this season with the dubious distinction of going 100 years without a title.
