(FORMER) TOP DOG THE CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL HOUSE MUSIC FESTIVAL
RISING THREATS BIZ 3 TENT AT THE PITCHFORK FESTIVAL, PURENATION FESTIVAL

As the birthplace of house, Chicago deserves a big dance-music festival to rival Detroit’s popular Movement: Detroit Electronic Music Festival. But 2006’s Move: the Chicago International House Music Festival—two days at Charter One Pavilion that the city has no plans to repeat—disappointed on several fronts. Sure, house heavies Frankie Knuckles and Derrick Carter worked the tables, with help from a bunch of first- and second-generation house DJs (including Lady D and Terry Hunter). But few young clubbers are dying to time travel back to the club scene of the late ’80s and early ’90s; it felt like a family reunion where all the kids had been locked out. Where was the new talent? And Christ, why didn’t house offshoot juke get some play?

The next attempt, if it happens, should take a tip from the Biz 3 tent at Pitchfork ’06 (sadly missing in ’07), where contemporary electronic and club music acts kept a sweaty crowd grinding all day. Likewise, the Purenation Festival at Charter One in September 2006 brought progressive house, techno and trance, as well as indie dance and minimal-techno acts, to the same venue. A varied lineup would make for a much more interesting day of dancing.

    — John Dugan

Right on Andrew. I think we can both drift back to the peaceful gatherings at Cavallini's LOL. There's no need to play the role of the dumbass alpha-male & act hard. House is love.

You should talk about weds nights in grant park that happened for 2 summers. House heads came out in huge numbers and it got bigger just about every week. The line-up was mainly local but some big name out of towners came through like jeff mills ,herbert, superpitcher, dan bell. It was going so good until some young douchebags messed it up at daily plaza with a huge fight. I feel young kids just don't get house they would rather get all jerky-lurky with new wave electro then feel the real groove
