The condom broke
Pay attention to that small print on the condom box that says to store them within a certain temperature range. My long-distance college boyfriend took a long, hot motorcycle ride cross-country one summer and paid me a surprise visit, condoms in tow. When we finished our enthusiastic greeting, we realized the condom had busted open and was now pushed down to the base of his johnson like a cockring. My first plan of action was to consult the calendar. Damn. I was smack in the middle of my ovulatory phase: prime pregnancy time. We knew we were disease-free, but neither of us wanted a kid. At the time, my doc recommended two doses of high-potency birth control: I took them 12 hours apart, which induced a period that prevented pregnancy, but they also made me nauseous as hell. These days, ECPs, or emergency contraceptive pills (sometimes called “morning-after pills”) are available in the U.S. without a prescription, to both women and men 18 and older. Just ask your pharmacist for “Plan B.”
