    Top three… contests

    1
If the only cherries you’ve chomped are in martinis and Mott’s fruit cups, then you may have forgotten about their pits. But the folks at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm in Eau Claire, Michigan, haven’t: Their 35th annual International Cherry Pit Spit competition draws pit-spit enthusiasts from all over North America. Contestants get three chances to qualify (top 10 in men, women and youth divisions); then it’s farthest spit wins. Last year’s winner sailed his pit 58 feet, and the world record for pit spitting was set here in 1993 at 93 feet 6.5 inches. That guy is the spit.—July 5 at 10am.

    2
As much as you love the crispy pastry and creamy riccotta-filled goodness that is cannoli, you’ve gotta down more than ten to win Festa Pasta Vino’s Cannoli King Contest—and last year’s champion ate 12. Still sound appetizing? Fest organizer Ron Onesti describes how ingesting all that cannoli feels in the heat of the moment: “It’s like sex: You always want to have it a second time before you’ve had the first.” It’s truly anyone’s game, as the competition draws rough football players and elegant young ladies hoping to win cash ($500 was last year’s reward), trips (New York’s Little Italy or the boot country itself) and a lifetime supply of cannolis (oh, lord…). -—June 15, 6pm.

    3
The rules at the fourth annual Men In Kilts competition, part of the city’s Celtic Fest, are threefold: Put on a kilt; not-too-drunkenly strut your stuff to Irish music; wear underwear (the organizers check now after a few…incidents). Other than that, you can do whatever you desire to impress judges—a panel of lucky ladies including Sister Bernie, a Catholic nun–cum-comedian. Mary May, public relations coordinator with the Mayor’s Office of Special Events, says past contestants have leveraged cute babies (kilted, of course) and Braveheart mimicry to secure votes.—September 13 at 4:50pm (registration 4pm).
