A pair of teen body-count flicks opens Friday 16, none of which we had a chance to see in time for review. (Hmm, it's almost as if Hollywood sees critics as irrelevant to marketing of this genre.) An evil voodoo entity chases unlucky kids through the swamp in the R-rated Venom, directed by Jim Gillespie (I Know What You Did Last Summer) and featuring Bijou Phillips (The Door in the Floor), rapper Method Man and the hard-working Agnes Bruckner, who should maybe worry about winding up on the direct-to-video treadmill.
Directed by Jeff Wadlow and rated PG-13, Cry_Wolf concerns a high-school clique who spreads rumors about a nonexistent serial killer, only to see the hoax turn into bloody reality. Jared Padalecki (Gilmore Girls) is the big name among the teen cast; Jon Bon Jovi, Gary Cole and MacArthur genius grant recipient Anna Deavere Smith play adult authority figures and/or suspects.—Cliff Doerksen
