No, it’s not a punk band playing at the Note (though, if the name’s not taken, we call dibs). But The Porno Zombies—about a mad scientist (Phil Circle) who brings corpses back to life so they can do it on camera—does live up to the boozy, rock & roll nature the title implies. Onstage, for instance, a DJ dolled up in goth makeup spins everything from metal to Ratatat to the Beatles; she’s always there, casually sipping beer and occasionally paying attention to the scenes. That response is also the most writer Casarino should expect from his audience: some chuckles, some suds and the occasional head-bop to a nice soundtrack pick.
But he doesn’t let the transgressive content stand on its own. The show’s peppy narrator (an enjoyable Chris Popio) gets more stage time than any other character, and he rants and raves that this show will shock and offend us. Casarino definitely has an ear for ’50s monster-movie promos here, which is all part of the fun. But within what feels like ten minutes, phrases like “underbelly of our society,” “moral fiber” and “the threads of decency” start popping up all over the place, making what could’ve been a quick pop-cultural jab into something more like a narrative crutch (near the end, most characters speak this way).
Given the subject matter, a bloated script is kind of expected. But we would’ve liked to see less soapbox moments and more of Steven Gilpin; his subtly funny performance as a naïve do-gooder balances things when the rest of the cast is stuck in a strict, zany-to-the-max mode.
