“We totally gut rehabbed the house and garden a couple years back. We really wanted to maintain a big view to the garden. The front is Victorian, but in the back you feel like you’re not in the city: You’re under a dogwood and among the ferns; ivy is coming down. Not everything is too austere and designed—we grow and use fun plants like basil.”

“It’s a traditional English cottage garden based on groups of roses underplanted with traditional English plants. Old-fashioned roses tend to be pastel colors—soft pinks and creams. They’re complemented by chartreuse foliage; I try not to have too wide a palette. I’m a lawyer—this just keeps the blood pressure down.”

“Because the back is the El tracks, the front part of the house is the only garden. To extend the growing space, I add containers and plant them with interesting greens and flowers, like a pink-and-white begonia, a petunia that’s a salmon color and a Purple Lady. I stick to a palette, otherwise your eyes would cross. I’ve been working on this for ten years; I also volunteer garden at Oz Park.”

I am a proud mommy of my very first garden, and as such, I marvel at other gardens with a scrupulous eye. I think David McCourt's garden at 2227 N Clifton Ave is absolutely gorgeous! Nice work Mr. Clifton--if only my black thumb could get lessons from you.
