Besides a fictional cable-access show with Mike Myers, the Chicago suburb of Aurora can also now lay claim to one of the biggest regional Mexican bands in the world, Alacranes Musical. As a band playing Duranguense—a style popularized in Chicago by immigrants from the state of Durango, Mexico, earlier this decade—Alacranes inhabit a frenetic version of that musical genre’s laid-back, accordion-heavy cousin, norteño. Think preternaturally hyper tuba bass lines (played on a keyboard, no less), blazing tempos, snare drum rolls rattling off like Chinese firecrackers and singers who would make Dashboard Confessional and Bright Eyes look like introverts. Ironically, as aggressively giddy as their polka sounds, the majority of the Duranguense songs—from “No Voy a Llorar” to “Un Idiota”—are meditations on the theme of ye olde unrequited love.
While Alacranes’ sound may carry the most cachet, the annual Viva! Fest makes a concerted effort to demonstrate the breadth of the Latin musical world, both from the Chicago area and beyond. Johnny Pacheco, the legendary Dominican salsero and cofounder of salsa’s flagship label, Fania Records, headlines Saturday 26. And norteño from Los Rieleros Del Norte, merengue from Grupo Mateos, wonderfully schmaltzy rancheros from Cicero’s own Juan Silverio and the slow-moving shuffle of cumbia from Mazz should make even the most xenophobic fan take note.
More to the point, Viva! reflects an important shift for the city. To the stew that already includes electric blues, alt-country, post-rock and conscious hip-hop, you can now add Duranguense as music that found its true incubator here in Chicago.—Matthew Lurie
