    Time Out Chicago / Issue 156 : Feb 21–27, 2008
    Just opened

    Union Pizzeria

    PHOTO: MARTHA WILLIAMS

STATE OF THE UNION Evanston residents with a taste for Italian have been eagerly watching the progress of Campagnola’s little sister space a few blocks away, slated to be called Wild Geese. The wood-burning oven went in, the paint went up, the tables were placed and chef Vince DiBattista started tinkering with dishes, namely the restaurant’s cornerstone: pizza. In fact, the pizzas became such a focus that just a week or so ago, owner Steve Schwartz changed the name to Union Pizzeria, and now he’s ready to open. More casual and lighter on the wallet than Campagnola, Union will attempt authentic Italian pies in classic combinations like the flag-waving Margherita and sausage with peppers, but also one sauced with bechamel then topped with arugula and prosciutto, and another that drizzles chile oil over lamb sausage, olives and roasted eggplant. If watching the pizza action at the custom-built oven gets your stomach growling, there are a dozen antipasti (pictured) and a handful of pastas with which to start. 1245 Chicago Ave, Evanston (847-475-2400).

I will never go to Union again. And, depending on the outcome of a conversation I intend to have with owner, Steve Schwartz, I will decide whether to return to Campagnola also. As a frequent restaurant visitor, and a former food industry professional, I was shocked and dismayed by the philosophy of Union. Our party of 6 arrived after work on Friday, April 11 to celebrate a colleague’s promotion & birthday. The hostess was immediately accommodating; led us to a table upon seeing that I am handicapped . Our evening went downhill from there. Our waitress arrived. She announced the Union “policy” is to “turn the table over in 1-1 1/2 hours.” We were instructed to order our drinks, and when she returned, she would take our order for ALL the food we wished to have for the duration of our stay (reminded again of our time limit). I said we would please have two pizzas and soup now. She said she would “try to ask the management for an exception.” We ate our potato and goat cheese pizza (nice crust, limp potato, tasteless goat cheese), sausage pizza (nice crust, overall good taste) and chick pea soup (very good). We also order another round of drinks and a small plate of sausages (nice presentation, average taste). One of our party had walk across the restaurant to ask for knives and forks, since they had been removed from our table. Heather, the manager, literally shoved this 22 year old woman and snapped, “oh yes, right away” when she asked for the flatware. We ordered another round of drinks, also. It was at this point that Heather approached our table and ORDERED us to vacate our table and move to the bar area (where there was standing room only), because we were violating POLICY. I told her I was handicapped and could not stand and explained that we were indeed ordering (our drinks cost more than the food!), she became hostile, said, “she would pay our bill” and wanted us to vacate the table, re-stating the POLICY that the tables are for ordering food. When I asked her if Steve Schwartz was aware of her customer relations style, she informed me she was a partner of Steve’s and this was “her place.” She grabbed our bill; I refused to let her pay our $135.00 bill. I paid our bill. Union defies its chosen name (perhaps they should have stayed with Geese so customers could “fly out” of there!). This is not a place for union and fellowship over good food. This is not the place for casual enjoyment of food and friends. They have a stated policy, which they are quick to share with the customer: you are to be in and out of there so the next gaggle can sweep in. And then, like Geese, make a V-line for the door. Union’s food is adequate. The pizza has a nice crust, but the toppings are lame. The beer menu is terrific. For better pizza, a welcoming atmosphere, a wider menu and great wine, I’ll choose Trattoria D.O.C. down the street, again!
