IT’S HUGE IN JAPAN If you think fro-yo is a hot trend locally, take a trip to Japan, where everyone already has been-there-done-that and moved on to izakayas, gastropubs where drinking and eating go hand-in-hand. Lynn Wallack and Josh Hansen, the owner and chef (respectively) of Lakeview’s Deleece, are taking a cue from the Japanese trend and opening Shochu this week. Named for the best-selling spirit in Japan (and here you thought it was sake), Shochu has a menu that seems tailor-made for those with ADD—small plates like teriyaki quail and Kobe carpaccio abound, and everything from maki and sushi to yakitori (grilled skewers of marinated veggies and meat) and kara-age (all things fried, from wings to dumplings) can be ordered by the piece. And of course, shochu is the star of the show, not only served straight, but also blended into cocktails with fruit purees and teas. Traditional diners might find it hard to focus, but that’s the last priority at a place named for hard liquor. 3313 N Clark St between Aldine Ave and Buckingham Pl (773-348-3313).
