    Time Out Chicago / Issue 167 : May 8–14, 2008
    Alfresco eating & drinking

    Best view of...the water

Not so long ago, noshing next to the Chicago River sounded as appealing as eating a fish caught from its murky waters. But beautification projects have changed all that, and now dining riverside provides the ultimate summer view.

    OTHER FAVORITES
Cyrano’s Café and Wine Bar on the Riverwalk (233 E South Riverwalk Parkway, 312-616-1400) At French chef Didier Durand’s outdoor riverside café, you can bet on two things: Edith Piaf playing over the speakers and lots of pups (he’s a big advocate of allowing dogs on patios). But with an all-French wine list and bistro food such as mussels and housemade pâté, Durand’s throwing a bone to us humans, too. —David Tamarkin

Flatwater (321 N Clark St, 312-644-0283) When we reviewed this riverside lounge, we didn’t have many compliments for the food. So if we can still recommend this spot for its amazing view of the river—not to mention its proximity to the water—it must really be something. Still, you should stick to Flatwater’s admirable selection of Champagne. —David Tamarkin

Sabor Latino Café (1301 N Humboldt Blvd, no phone; open mid-May–Oct) One of our lesser-known favorites is this casual, counter-service Puerto Rican café on the veranda of the Humboldt Park Boathouse. Lounge on padded chairs at white wooden tables while taking in the goose-packed lagoon, chowing down on a plato tipico (roast pork, rice with pigeon peas and plantain tamale), and sipping fresh tropical juices. —Heather Shouse
