    Beer Garden Guide 2008

Guzzle alfresco at 68 bar patios, rooftop retreats and sizzling sidewalks

    Photos: Martha Williams

Every year we do it. We curse our beloved city under our breaths for a brutal winter, a short spring and a summer that really doesn’t get into full swing until July. But then it happens: The skirts get shorter, tans get deeper, patios spring to life and there we are, margarita in hand, back in love with Chicago all over again. In fact, we’re so googly-eyed that any sidewalk with a chair and a cold beer would do. But why stop there when there are enough outdoor drinking spots to find a favorite for every day of the week? From swank spots for splurging on bottles of bubbly to beer gardens where pitchers go as fast as Sox-Cubs tickets (and every corner tap in between), guzzling in the great outdoors is more than a privilege in this town—it’s a well-earned right.

—Heather Shouse, Eat & Drink Editor

Let the liquor flow: Finding the right outdoor arena is as easy as answering a few questions, provided you answer while still sober.
Pub crawls: Follow these tours of some of our beer garden hot spots.
Dive in: Down ’n’ dirty drinkin’
    Get high: Rooftop decks
    Grape escapes: Wine bars
    Lush retreats: Idyllic backgrounds
    Urban immersion: Streetside city swilling
