With a background as a theater producer and a director, Billy Pacholski easily segued into event planning. “I’ve done my share of opening-night parties,” Pacholski says. “Beyond that, any really good party or event is theater in and of itself.” After three years at a corporate creative agency, the enterprising 30-year-old has branched out into his own business, specializing in event and marketing design, with work ranging from building websites to planning kick-ass parties.
It was through helping a friend plan a soiree that he found his way to Lincoln Park contemporary boutique Art Effect. While his friend was attracted to the jewelry collection, Pacholski experienced serendipity as he drank in the store’s treasure trove of quirky sundries. And he’s been hooked ever since. “I love to help people find unusual ways to express themselves,” he says. For example, when his corkscrew recently broke, rather than grab a standard-issue replacement at the liquor store, he picked up a banana-shaped wine-bottle opener at Art Effect, which has been a neighborhood fixture for 24 years. “It’s a great conversation piece,” he says of the opener with a grin.
No matter what kind of party you throw this month—from a winter-solstice observance to a New Year’s Eve bash—the store’s array of practical and frivolous goods will bring the Pacholski-endorsed “element of fun surprise.”
