    Metallic

Designers focused on heavy metal during the Spring 2008 runway shows; here’s our take.

    By Kevin Aeh

The trend Many male models looked like shiny, happy people as they walked the catwalks sporting new looks from the Spring 2008 collections. Sheer garments and metallic hues are two of the big trends for the season, and the sharp look showed up on jackets, bags, swimwear and even pants, like this slick, gold pair by Heatherette.

Expert advice Because this can be such a flashy look, Chicago guys could easily feel intimidated. But don’t be afraid to sport a little shine. According to Ralph Fasano and Jeff Worth, owners of men’s boutique His Stuff, metallics look great as an accent on, or woven into, fabric in button-downs and T-shirts. “But not as an all-over look, like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz,” they say. If you do go with the overall metallic effect on a main piece of clothing, opt for a more muted, or even tarnished version (think sheen, not shine), like a gun-metal colored jacket. Jim Wetzel, co-owner of überstylish boutique Jake, says the key is to take that one metallic piece and make it the star. “Everything else you wear should be neutral and unassuming—almost dull,” he says. You can also follow the trend by sporting a pair of metallic-colored or shiny patent-leather shoes.

On Seun Phillips, an engineer who lives in Arlington Heights Armani Exchange jacket, $198 at Armani Exchange (520 N Michigan Ave at Grand Ave, 312-467-5702 ); Union long-sleeve T-shirt, $35 at Nordstrom Rack (24 N State St at Calhoun Pl, 312-377-5500); Nau Confidant pants, $138 at Nau (2118 N Halsted at Dickens Ave, 773-281-1363).

Would he wear it? “I like a little flashiness, but I wouldn’t wear anything shinier than this—it’s just flashy enough. I’d wear this to the club.”
