    Bows

Designers tied one on this spring. Here’s our take on the look.

The trend With all of the bows adorning women’s outfits in the spring 2008 collections, it was as if designers were treating their clothes like wrapped presents. Sophisticated knots were found on shoulders, in hairdos and also just below the neckline, as shown on this Reem Acra dress.

Expert advice “This feminine detail can add a lot to an otherwise boring outfit—without being overtly sexy, yet remaining classy and sophisticated,” says Nicolette Prpa, owner of SHE, a boutique with locations in Lincoln Park and Highland Park. Prpa says to focus on one piece of your outfit and give it a bow detail. “Too many items with bows on them will take away from the effect,” she says. You should avoid shiny fabrics like satin that recall bridesmaid dresses or the 1980s (and not in a good way) and instead go with softer looks, like this bow we created using two cotton pink scarves. While big bows are fun, Prpa says you should pick ones that complement your body size. “If you’re a small woman, it’s best to choose a bow that’s small as well, so you don’t overwhelm your figure,” she says.

On Kate Sanderson, a graphic designer who lives in Logan Square American Apparel scarves, $15 each at American Apparel (locations around the city, americanapparel.net); Poleci skirt, $20 at Filene’s Basement (830 N Michigan Ave, 312-482-8918, filenesbasement.com); bracelet, stylist’s own.

Would she wear it? “Even though I usually go for a retro-meets-casual and comfy with a girly twist, this really isn’t my style.”
