Stressed-out fellas who haven’t developed a regular massage habit may wonder if something besides years of psychotherapy is needed to undo deep back knots and recurring leg tightness. We found the cure in Sir Spa’s Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, a type of bodywork developed by Buddhist monks around 3,000 years ago, but only now recognized by the American Medical Association. A trained (and often small) therapist suspends from parallel bars and uses his or her feet (ashi means “foot”) and full body weight to apply concentrated pressure for a seriously deep deep-tissue massage. It’s intense for sure, particularly the first 15 “what the eesh” minutes, but the results are life altering, giving the term ass-kicking a whole new (positive) meaning. 5151 N Clark St (773-271-7000, sirspa.com). $110 for 60 minutes.
