We major? Come on, homie we major.
The Chicago Machine’s reign as the city’s newest pro sports franchise was oddly short. In fact, the Machine held the title for less than a month. What makes this even more surprising is that the team, the newest member of Major League Lacrosse, had its moment ended by—no joke—the announcement of yet another professional lacrosse team, this one playing in the National Lacrosse League.
Yep, by this time next year, Chicago (okay, Chicagoland) will be home to not one, but two professional lacrosse teams. The Machine, which will play outdoors at Benedictine University in Lisle, will not only compete against the Cubs, Sox, Bears and Bulls for Chicagoans’ disposable income, but also against the as-yet-unnamed indoor lacrosse team, which will play its games during the winter at the new Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates.
In comparison, the Sky (which plays the first game of its inaugural season in late May) seems like a sure bet. Yes, the WNBA is still a fringe sport, but at least most people who watch SportsCenter have heard of it, and could probably even name a couple pro women ballers.
These new teams join an already crowded field that includes the Rush, the Fire, the Storm, the Bandits, and the Wolves, not to mention four or five minor-league baseball teams within a reasonable drive.
All of which raises the question: Is there any pro sports niche left to fill?
