BP Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio Broadcast Series WFMT-FM (Sun 21, 1–3pm). Gerard McBurney, the creative director of the CSO, hosts this popular Beyond the Score series, in which he situates famous orchestral pieces in their social and historical contexts. In this broadcast, McBurney guides his audience through several pieces, including Shostakovich’s ominous pre-WWII Symphony No. 4, which will be performed live under CSO conductor Bernard Haitink. Think of it as VH1’s Behind the Music, minus all the bankruptcy and backstabbing.
Chicago Bites chicagobites.com. As the youngest four-star chef in America, Graham Elliot Bowles redefined hotel dining during his stint at Avenues at the Peninsula. But frou-frou fine dining wasn’t Bowles’s cup of tea. This week, Chicago Bites hosts Tammy Green and Bridget Houlihan make their way to his newish digs, the “bistronomic” restaurant graham elliot. After some initial mixed reviews, Bowles has promised that some changes—both to the menu and the ambience—are in store. Will Green and Houlihan fawn over his quirky menu, or will they scowl at the Cheez-Its in their risotto?
The Ricky Gervais Show rickygervais.com. Before NBC’s hit comedy The Office, there was, well, The Office, the BBC’s equally popular predecessor. Brainchild of British comedian Ricky Gervais, The Office catapulted its creator into critically acclaimed shows like HBO’s Extras and, most recently, The Ricky Gervais Show. The podcast’s fifth and final season was recently released as an audiobook on iTunes ($6.95), where it promises to “blast the boundaries of blather.”
Sound Opinions WBEZ-FM 91.5 (Fri 19, 8–9pm, rebroadcast Sat 20, 11am–noon). There is only one rock & roll talk show worth listening to, and it’s hosted right here in our town by two of our most respected rock critics, Jim DeRogatis (the music critic for the Chicago Sun-Times) and Greg Kot (the Chicago Tribune’s critic). The two guys have carved out a loyal fan base that tunes in to hear their opinionated and spirited discussions of indie-music favorites. This week, the pair unearths a new batch of “Buried Treasures” in their semiannual segment honoring some of the best music never to make MTV’s Buzz Bin.
Wheezy Waiter wheezywaiter.com. From fighting an infestation of animated bugs to receiving multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by his future self (yeah, you read that right), Chicago video-blogger Wheezy Waiter (a.k.a. Craig Benzine) blends a confessional tone with adolescent antics to create entertaining posts that are way more professional-looking than they really need to be. If nothing else, Wheezy Waiter differentiates himself from other video bloggers through sheer prolificacy: For his “Summer of Wheezy” in July, he posted a video every day of the month. And a deft hand at Final Cut Pro has scored Benzine’s movies airtime at local short-film festivals. After a slow September so far, Wheezy Waiter gets back in the game with footage of end-of-summer yacht parties and synchronized-swimming routines (coached by an eager eight-year-old).

Thanks so much for the great podcast plug! Much appreciated.
Just wanted you to know that I'm going to post a "Lollapalooza '08" episode before the Nils Lofgren episode, since at the very last minute I was able to get backstage at Lollapalooza and nab some fun interviews. It should be online within 24-48 hours.
Thanks!
