Like other games in the Mario Kart franchise, MKW places the titular chubby plumber and his skinny brother Luigi, boisterous lizard king Bowser, Princess Peach and others behind the wheels of wacky automobiles, as they speed their way through races set in the Mushroom Kingdom. The game’s perfectly playable without the enclosed Wii Wheel, but it does seem to add a bit of fine-tuning, even if you feel weird holding a plastic steering wheel in midair. With its crazy jumps and cartoony fast-paced mayhem, Mario Kart’s a title that just about anyone can pick up and play. You also can drive as your Mii avatar, so feel free to put him behind the game’s new motorbikes and get your motor runnin’. Unfortunately, this Wii version loses the two-man team-ups that were such a popular part of the franchise’s appearance on the Nintendo DS. In fact, the biggest criticism against the Wii version is that it feels much like the DS one (which felt like the Gamecube version, which felt like the Nintendo 64 version). But slingin’ green shells at fellow racers always has been, and always will be, a blast.
