Ride the CTA for free on New Year's Eve

You'll be able to ring in 2016 by saving a few bucks on your train or bus ride. The CTA is offering free (or penny) rides on New Year's Eve, a year-end practice that dates back 1985. The promotion is sponsored by MillerCoors’ Miller Lite, which touts it as a way to give "residents and visitors free and safe transportation" on the holiday.

The free rides will be available from 10pm through 4am on December 31. During that window, you'll be able to walk right through CTA turnstiles or onto a bus. Don't tap your Ventra card, as you could still be charged despite the fact that rides are ostensibly "free."

Even though you could save $5, riding the CTA on New Year's Eve isn't exactly a pleasant experience. Chicagoans tend to mistake the end of the year for the end of the world, and drink accordingly at New Year's Eve parties all over town. If you do decide to hop on a train at 3am, be wary of rogue vomit and blacked out slobs getting up in your grill.
