The Hypocrites are filling the final slot in their current season with a new adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus. Johanna Faustus, co-authored by Sean Graney and Emily Casey, recasts the soul-selling protagonist as a woman.
Staged in the style of Graney's Romeo Juliet and 12 Nights, Johanna Faustus will feature six actors, who also serve collectively as the production's designers. The show will run for eight performances only, May 20–29 at the Den Theatre.
The announcement comes on the heels of last week's big showing at the Jeff Awards for Graney's Greek-tragedies adaptation All Our Tragic, in which Casey was a member of the cast. The Hypocrites' current production of American Idiot continues through October 25.
