Description
This 18,000-square-foot permanent exhibit traces the origins of human life in the Americas through 2,200 artifacts belonging to more than 20 distinct native groups, from the Hopewell of the Midwest to the Inca of South America. Rather than chronologically or geographically arranging the cultures, the Field tries something new with this show: Innovations such as animal domestication, farming and governments provide the peg for each section. The stated hope is that this will allow the viewer to see prehistoric Americans as individuals and social groups rather than the exotic other. The exhibit might have a lofty objective, but displays like 200 scarce gold objects from conquistador-ravaged 16th-century Colombia make it a must-see nonetheless.
