Description
Loosely based on 8½, Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film about a director in midcareer and midlife crisis, Nine follows film director Guido's desperate case of director's block, exacerbated by his Casanova tendencies: juggling his wife, his mistress and his actress muse. Walter Stearns's direction here is a huge step up from his previous outing (last fall's seemingly thrown-together Phantom, another Kopit-Yeston work). His strong conception is helped by Brenda Didier's smart but never-showy choreography and a bang-up cast of some of the finest talent in Chicago musical theater; these actors go the whole nine yards.—KV
