The Ballad of Emmett Till
Description
Emmett Till, the 14-year-old Chicagoan who was murdered during a 1955 trip to Mississippi, has maintained less celebrity status than cause célèbre status. And nowhere are such causes more celebrated than in nonprofit theater, where no martyr is ever turned away. The Goodman's tepid look at Till's life does little to distinguish itself from other Chicago plays in recent years that have examined the same story, save looking vaguely more expensive. In fact, there's almost nothing particular about Ifa Bayeza's misty script or Oz Scott's production; even some of the city's most unique actors somehow fade in this wash.—Christopher Piatt
