Description
Post-apocalyptic noise rock for hipsters and artists, New York's Liars have kept even their fans off-balance by constantly shifting their already off-kilter form. After surfacing during the great New York dance-punk wave of 2002, the trio burrowed into its own bowels with two releases of little more than Wiccan chanting over drums. Critics wet themselves without noticing Johnny Lydon pulled the same stunt 20 years ago with Public Image Ltd. One thing remains constant, however: their live show has few peers. Ssion's Fool's Gold solidifies the quartet's place squarely in the midst of the wild-rock set, which too often elevates showiness over talent and ideas. But Ssion's Cody Critcheloe does have ideas—about ego, celebrity and old-time scuzz rock. While all the song topics aren't always as enthralling as “Street Jizz,” the band's live show, with visuals and costumes and, you know, wildness, should at least hold your attention.
