John Dugan
CLUBS EDITOR
COVERS: Clubs, nightlife, DJ nights, dance music, live electronica, club news, listening events, parties
Dugan previously worked as nightlife and music editor at Chicago.Citysearch.com. He began writing reviews and features on music, the arts and local news for the Washington City Paper in the late '90s between tours as drummer for mod trio Chisel. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in government in 1993 and worked for Amnesty International before selling his soul for rock & roll (and journalism). He also studied nonfiction writing at Johns Hopkins University. He plays the drum kit and spins records at Chicago clubs regularly. He has freelanced for Time Out guides, the Chicago Reader, Twin Cities City Pages, JazzTimes, Stop Smiling, Zagat guides, the Chicago Tribune and others, but has had a crush on Time Out since doing a semester in London way back when.
Ask me about: Why 12-inch records sound good, trends in club music, the must-have record of the season, the history of disco/house/electro/punk/funk (but not country), essential local labels, hustling promoters, and what's wrong or right with the Chicago club scene.
