Garland, an original member of the Time Out Chicago staff, handled duties as the advertising director for the weekly arts and entertainment publication before being named publisher. Prior to joining Time Out Chicago, Garland was the national account executive with The Boston Phoenix, selling ads in more than 100 alternative weeklies nationwide through the Alternative Weekly Network, which at that time included the Village Voice, L.A. Weekly and Newcity in Chicago. Before that, Garland was the national account executive for Newcity from 1998 through 2000.
