Matthew Lurie
MUSIC WRITER
Lurie is Time Out Chicago's resident hip-hop, R&B, world-music and jazz expert. He chose to focus his final high-school newspaper essay on the virtues of rap artist Mase. After graduation, he enrolled at the University of Michigan, where he espoused equally suspect opinions and studied jazz piano at the music school. His writing has appeared in Harp magazine as well as the Chicago Tribune, where he was the unofficial expert on hip-hop music. When not swearing that the Neptunes have finally lost their touch, Lurie enjoys weightlifting, jogging and praising Billy Wilder.
Ask me about: The difference between hip-hop and rap, world music in your backyard, and how a rock club like the Empty Bottle has emerged as the new center of Chicago jazz.
