Last year at this time there was a lot of murmuring about Chicago's poor performance at the James Beard Awards. Not this year. The chef awards, which were announced last night, were bestowed on many Chicago chefs, most notable Mindy Segal, who won Outstanding Pastry Chef after being nominated (and not winning) the previous five years. (The win comes at a poignant time for Segal—she is reopening HotChocolate this week after going through something of a professional and personal transformation. Details here.)

Other Chicago chefs who won awards: Grant Achatz, who received the award for Best New Restaurant for Next (Achatz was also inducted into the Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America); Charlie Trotter, who won Humanitarian of the Year; and Bruce Sherman, the chef-owner at North Pond, who won the Best Chef: Great Lakes category.
