We may not have had a real heat wave this summer, but we'll take this recent wave of ice cream openings. First JP Graziano teamed up with chef Ben Roche to make creamy gelato in flavors like risotto and tomato. Then the Gladwell Company hit the road in a custom tricycle with a freezer of ice cream treats. And now Cone, an Irish-themed ice cream shop, has opened a storefront in the West Loop. Which should you hit for your next ice cream fix? We assessed all three this week.

Where: JP Graziano

The story Chef Ben Roche (formerly of Baume & Brix and Moto) makes gelato with ingredients that JP Graziano provides and sells them at the West Loop storefront. On our visit, the options were vanilla, chocolate or risotto gelato and blood orange sorbetto. Flavors rotate and have also included tomato, pistachio and lemon-basil.

Price $5 for a sizable dish. You can get two kinds of gelato in each dish, so you can try more flavors.

How's it taste? We tried the blood orange sorbetto and risotto gelato. While the sorbetto was light and refreshing, the risotto, made with arborio rice, white wine, olive oil, Parmesan and saffron, is a game-changer. The gelato is so creamy and mild in flavor that it still feels like a dessert.

Takeway We'll be back for more, and sooner rather than later.
