Those looking to let their hair down in the Midwest are not short of options—especially if the Windy City's within trekking distance. Chicago’s rock and roll heritage stands it in good stead and Chicago music festivals are up there with the best in the world.

Since its arrival on the scene in 2005, hipster favorite Pitchfork has spawned many imitators, but remains one of the most exciting indie music festivals around (and 2014 headliners including Grimes and Kendrick Lamar means that things continue to look fresh). Then, of course, there's the legendary Lollapalooza in Grant Park, which continues to draw the big guns year after year (think Kings of Leon and OutKast).
