[title]A fantastic slate of March concerts got off to a great start Broken Bells brought its second album to the Vic Theatre on Saturday 1. The new record is called After the Disco, but its offers its over mellow dance kicks—especially live.
James Mercer started messing with groove on the Shins' Wincing the Night Away, and super-producer bandmate Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton has only help honed those skills. It's pretty remarkable that a guy from the West Coast indie-folk scene has come to sound a bit like the Bee Gees with his mildly psychedelic funk-pop. Can you imagine the singer of Fleet Foxes releasing the falsetto heavy ""Holding on for Life"?
Which is why we think critics have been unfairly hard on the duo. Nobody really sounds like this right now, and if they do, it's because Danger Mouse is lending a hand. Not that the sold out crowd seemed to care what rock writers had to say. They were too busy swaying in the swirls of sound as Mercer and Burton performed behind white swooping keyboard stands that looked like something from Logan's Run.
