Dum Dum Girls bring pleather and hearts to Empty Bottle (SLIDE SHOW)

Sub Pop's gothic girl group rocked a sold-out show with its black bubblegum pop. Check out shots of the band.

In the 1980s, the stormy California pop of Stevie Nicks and the stoic garage squalls of the Jesus and Mary Chain did not seem to appeal to the same listener. Though Dee Dee Penny of the Dum Dum Girls, a.k.a. Kristin Welchez, was clearly listening to both. And, really, why not? The hair and makeup wasn't that different. The cover to Nicks's The Wild Heart could pass for Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Too True, the lastest blast of gothic Go-Go's from the Dum Dum Girls, found the sweet middle ground between Stevie and the JAMChain. Last night, Dee Dee, Jules, Sandy and Malia took to the small Empty Bottle stage like the Pink Ladies gone S&M, playing their black bubblegum pop in pleather and heels. A large heart glowed behind them; a mascara-heavy eye gazed from the kick drum. Appropriately, the band played both "Bedroom Eyes" and "Rimbaud Eyes." Somebody get them a Cover Girl contract, stat. The Girls also threw in a shoegazer nugget, a cover of the Pale Saint's "Sight of You."

The show sold out in a flash. The wonderful Blouse opened with its airy krautrock grooves.
