Badly behaved BYOB customers

When Chicago's diners bring their own booze, the results aren't always pretty. Restaurant workers dish on the worst behavior they've seen.

Yakety yak, don’t come back
We have the unfortunate distinction of having our bathroom right near the kitchen, so we see all kinds of BYO shenanigans. My favorite story is from when a chef friend of mine brought his family in after a Cubs game for dessert. They were already hammered, but they brought some more wine and had a good time. We thought the event was going well, but then one of my cooks found the guy’s aunt yakking in the bathroom. —Chef/owner, Lakeview restaurant

Sit, stay
We had a huge party come in one Saturday night. They brought, like, two bottles of wine per person and started getting all obnoxious, yelling at their server and acting like jackasses. About a half hour after they finished their meal, they were still drinking like mad. Eventually, we needed the table, so we asked them if they could move to the bar. They got up angrily, saying they’ll never come here again. The next day, they posted a negative review on Yelp. —Chef/owner, Bucktown restaurant

What a steal
One night, a group of women came in, drank a lot, and at the end of the night, they poured the rest of their bottles into glasses, paid the bill and left the restaurant [with our glasses]. One of our servers ran out and asked what they were doing. One of the women responded, “What’s your problem? I wasn’t finished with my wine.” We told her that they had our glasses, so she poured the wine out on the sidewalk and angrily gave them back. —Manager, Bucktown restaurant
