If you’re joining the ranks of countless sushi joints in this city, you better set yourself apart or you’ll swim with the fishes (so to speak). Sushi Taiyo, from the owners of Rise and Shine Morida, manages to stand out with terrible-sounding, yet surprisingly delicious, maki like the Kinomi: white fatty tuna and avocado topped with a plump raspberry and raspberry reduction. That tart-and-creamy roll, combined with exquisite sashimi and the Norwegian-ish decor, makes up for the more forgettable entrées, like fried calamari and bland scallops and mushrooms on rice—both of which are anything but attention-grabbing.
