Daina Karklins, Trim
Mon Feb 2 2009
While there’s simply no getting around the fact that spread-eagling, pantyless, for a complete stranger to remove “unwanted hair” is regrettably awkward, Karklins has a knack for easing the pain—both socially and physically. As I nervously brace myself for a Brazilian wax, the 25-year-old Chicago native tells me about growing up in Logan Square and her background in aesthetics—working at a handful of local salons over the past three years before settling at Trim. Occasionally, I wince at the sting of hair getting yanked from particularly sensitive parts (she repeatedly asks if I’m okay), but in general, her swift, confident touch and perfectly angled pull on the wax make for an entirely bearable experience. After tidying up (no strays in sight) and advising me to avoid major activities like running for a day or two, she salutes me with a pat on the back. Before I have a chance to browse the lacy lingerie, hair products and accessories (down-there dye and adhesive gemstones), she offers to touch up my face with one of the lip glosses available for sale at the salon. As for the aftermath? I don’t feel even a tad sore, and after 48 hours, my skin is pristinely rash-free. Bikini wax $25 and up.
