Count on Chipotle for innovative ways to keep their fan base fervent. From free burritos on Halloween for foil-wrapped customers to this weekend's first ever Chipotle Cultivate Festival in Lincoln Park, the fast-food chain certainly knows how to get the word out about their locally sourced and organic initiatives without turning to the ubiquitous TV and print ads you'd expect from a similar behemoth company.

As if on some sort of perverse schedule, October 1st in Chicago marked our first truly nippy day and the official start to fall. At Cultivate, however, an impressive lineup of beers and wines in the Brewer's Hall staved off the chill with more craft brews than you could shake a small-batch stick at. Brewers from around the Midwest and the nation were on display—drafts from Half Acre, Goose Island, Revolution and Bell's were among the nine represented, with select wineries, too—all at at a very reasonable $5 per pull. A $1 taster's shot offered the chance to skip around and try something out of your comfort zone, and it seemed nearly everyone left with a new brew to love.

Good beer was only the tip of the iceberg at this foodie fest, though. "Locally grown" was the phrase of the day with an Artisan's Tent featuring 18 local food companies proffering their wares, from craft chocolate to organic fruits and veggies to small-batch popcorn—it was a farmers' market on (organic) steroids. A set of chef's tents brought Food Network-quality production to demonstrations from some of the nation's top kitchens, with Paul Kahan and Amanda Freitag among those showing off their skills for packed audiences. Chipotle, for their part, brought their A-game as well, with multiple tents dedicated to new products—tostadas, black-corn tortilla soft tacos, pozole soup and barbacoa chili were some of the offerings you might expect to see in your local Chipotle outpost soon.

And what would a good festival be without music? The Cave Singers, The Rural Alberta Advantage, White Rabbits, Mayer Hawthorne and Calexico brought the rock, taking over an impressively sized stage to keep kids and kids-at-heart alike jumping. As if all that wasn't enough to keep your foodie heart occupied, five educational tents offered by Chipotle brought an informative component to the fest, offering the chance to earn a free burrito coupon to those who took the time to learn where their food actually comes from. No surprise that Chipotle itself is directly invested in educating the masses, given that one of their main selling points is serving "Food With Integrity." When learning about factory farms and locally-sourced food options is this fun and tasty, who wouldn't bite? Let's hope Chipotle keeps up this alternative to mass advertising, because this unique fest was certainly was a lot more enjoyable and educational than a 30-second TV clip could ever be.
