Dream Reapers Haunted House
For years, this attraction has been the most feared of area haunted houses. A 22-room, 14,000-square-foot attraction with high-tech animatronics and a cast of more than 40 actors scare the bejesus out of you. 1945 Cornell Ave, Melrose Park (708-344-2084, dreamreapers.com). Dungeon of Doom Haunted House
This terrorfest is home to 60 actors all hell-bent on making you cry with fear. Several sections—one of which is described simply as “you will be suspended in the air and surrounded by clowns”—let patrons opt for one or all levels of scare. VIP passes (available online only) include entry to all attractions and the freedom to skip to the head of the line. 2701 Deborah Ave, Zion (262-331-0092, dungeonofdoom.com). Opens October 2. Eleventh Hour
This four-haunt site promises the usual fright fixings: Bloody bodies, confusing catacombs and zany zombies await in the mirrored maze, pitch-black labyrinth and cemetery. 434 E Devon Ave, Elk Grove Village (eleventhhour.info). The Fear Haunted House
Your challenge: Walk through an evil cargo of captured beasts. These creatures—an insane clown, a decaying monster and a ravenous vampire, to name a few—have two things in common. Frightmare Haunted House
Located on the grounds of an amusement park, this haunted house includes a permanent 600-foot maze and a med-“Evil” Castle of Madness. 7759 S Harlem Ave, Burbank (708-598-8580, Frightmarehauntedhouse.com). Starts October 9. Mondays–Thursdays 6–10pm; Fridays 6–11pm; Saturdays 1–11pm; Sundays 1–10pm. Runs through October 31. $10.

Raven’s Grin Inn
The eccentric horror-monger, owner and resident isn’t the only spooky oddity you’ll discover, crammed inside the four-story mansion. 411 N Carroll St, Mount Carroll (815-244-4746, hauntedravensgrin.com). Mondays–Fridays 7pm–midnight; Saturdays and Sundays 2–5pm and 7pm–midnight; $12. Reservation strongly recommended.

Reaper’s Realm
Expect to find blood-soaked, demented freaks wandering the fright fete’s four main attractions: the Haunted Mansion, Reaper Woods, 3-D Circus and Carnevil. 626 177th St, Hammond, IN (reapersrealm.com). Opens October 2. Fridays and Saturdays 7pm–midnight; Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 7–10pm. Through October 31. Woods only $10, all attractions plus carnival ride $25.

Brookfield Jaycees Haunted House
The house of horrors returns for its 32nd year—old enough for its haunts to be truly haunted. Hanging skeletons, caged demented souls and possessed creatures chase you down. 4315 Park Ave, Brookfield (708-387-4695, brookfieldjaycees.com/HH). Opens October 15. Fridays–Saturdays 7–11pm; Sundays, Thursdays 7–10pm. Runs through November 1. $8, $6 seniors and kids 12 and under.

Richardson Corn Maze
The brainteasing factor is raised on Halloween, when local firefighters haunt two of the world’s largest mazes, covering 33 acres. 9407 Richardson Rd, Spring Grove (815-675-9729, richardsonfarm.com). October 1–31. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Wednesdays and Thursdays 3–10pm, Fridays 3–11pm, Saturdays 10am–11pm, Sundays noon–10pm. Six Flags Great America’s Fright Fest

Statesville Haunted Prison
Around every dark corner of the cells lurks a maniac, cannibal or demon ready to frighten the crap out of you. 17250 S Weber Rd, Crest Hill (877-722-7332, statesville.org). Opens October 2. Chronicles of the Cursed: Hades Emerges
Chicagoans’ worst nightmares comes true: At this 20,000-square-foot warehouse, city parking meters demand blood instead of cash. 560 W Grand Ave (cursedchicago.com). October 28–November 1, 7–11pm; $20, VIP $35.
