Really a park within a park, Millennium Park in the northwest corner of Grant Park was once an industrial hub for the Illinois Central Railroad. Today, it's a 24.5-acre urban playground that was first envisioned by former Mayor Richard M. Daley in the early 2000s. (As the story goes, he came up with the idea of the park while looking at a map of the area in a dentist chair.) Millennium Park is now home to the the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion and its many free concerts, as well as public art such as Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate(better known as The Bean) and Jaume Plensa's Crown Fountain, a kid-favorite during the summer months. The Pritzker Pavilion faces the picnic-perfect Great Lawn, where officially-hosted workout sessions ocassionally take place. On the park's south end, the five-acre Lurie Garden connects to Chicago's "city in a garden" motto and joins the park to the Art Institute of Chicago Modern Wing via a pedestrian bridge.
