Rebel Wilson in Pitch Perfect

MVP: Rebel Wilson in Pitch Perfect

Wilson steals scenes as an a capella alto.

Rebel Wilson doesn’t steal her scenes in Pitch Perfect so much as dominate them by brute force, obliterating the better-known actresses and more prominent characters around her. As a cappella alto Fat Amy—her real name, as far as anyone knows—she’s the proudest misfit in a group full of them, a flamboyant outsider who wears her eccentricity as a badge of shame. As Kristin Wiig’s unnerving roommate in Bridesmaids or Bachelorette’s grotesque bride-to-be, Wilson has proved herself a sharp and fearless comic talent, her pillowy bulk just one weapon in a substantial arsenal. She’s a bit player in Pitch Perfect, whose ostensible protagonist is Anna Kendrick’s beat-matching hipster, but every tossed-off aside is a finely cut gem, so much so that the moments when she’s not on screen start to feel like marking time. Wilson can lob snark without coming off as mean-spirited, or jam in pockets of covert surrealism, as when she quietly observes, “I wrestled a crocodile and a dingo at the same time.” It’s easy to wish there were more of Wilson in the movie, but in truth, she’s better off waiting in the wings, swooping in for the kill and then vanishing like a pale, doughy ninja.
