Hotel am Brillantengrund
Mix-and-match vintage furniture, Filipino dishes and snacks, free wi-fi and a splendid location in the hip 7th district make this one of Vienna’s best budget options. The hotel’s charming inner courtyard and ’60s-themed restaurant make it a favourite with local boho types. Rooms are spotless and also feature retro fittings. Bikes are available for rent.

Chic German chain 25hours trade in wacky themed décor – the circus in this case – with all mod cons and comforts. Don’t be put off by the gnomic ‘We are all mad here’ sign over the entrance: the 25hours has some great features, like its fabulous rooftop bar and Burger de Ville, a vintage Airstream trailer situated in the park beside the hotel that serves up great burgers during the spring and summer.

Opened in early 2015, Magdas is a converted old people’s home that Catholic charity Caritas set up to provide work for asylum seekers in Vienna. At present, some 20 people from 16 different countries are employed. Idyllically located beside the Prater yet within walking distance of public transport, Magdas has 80 rooms of varying sizes, decorated by students from the neighbouring art school.
