It’s rare to find a wine bar without snooty wine know-it-alls lurking over your shoulder, which is why Enoteca has a casual charm like no other. Overlooking the lively activity of The Place, the softly lit bar is warm and welcoming.

The well balanced and affordable wine list (the average price of a bottle hovers around 170RMB) covers both European and New World wines, with the reds divided into categories such as ‘sensualist’, ‘playful and provocative’, ‘hedonistic’, ‘sweet temptations’ or ‘garde’ – the latter boasting many impressive bottles with a price tag to match.

There’s also a small shop in the bar where Thomas, Enoteca’s Slovenian manager, will help you choose a tipple to take home. Enoteca only serves drinks made from grapes, but as well as wines you’ll also find cognac, Grand Marnier and even a unique variety of grape vodka.

With its assortment of deals (our favourite is Friday Wine Fever, where you get free flowing tapas and a select bottle of wine for just 200RMB), Enoteca is a pleasantly unpretentious spot to enjoy an after-work tipple. Annabel Greene
