Sattva

Buy quality art from Qinghai and Tibet

Sattva is the brainchild of Buddhist art enthusiast Carole Liu, who has travelled extensively around Tibet and Qinghai, and mainly sells art from the latter.

Many of the pieces here are from the town of Tongren, where most of the male family members are involved in designing Thangkas (5,000RMB).

The Thangkas are made from natural materials, with colour tones derived from grinding stones, and gold and silver from the real thing.

They’re expensive, but at least Liu is honest about the provenance of her pieces, and doesn’t try to justify the price by claiming they’re antiques.

We also love the Tibetan furniture, especially the exquisite six-piece screens (1,400RMB), coffee tables (1,700RMB) and drum seats (550RMB) made of wood and leather. Incense and prayer stones are also available alongside small Tibetan rugs (550RMB) made from yak wool.

Sattva is currently hosting the work of An Guyu, whose water ink paintings (200RMB) would look good in any home. The price of paintings includes frame and delivery.

Sattva 60 Wudaoying Hutong (east end, west of Vineyard Café), Dongcheng district (138 1116 9101). Open 11am-9pm daily.
